New Year's Resolution: Create a Website!

Three people told me this past week that their New Year's Resolution was to finally learn how to create a simple website.

There are lots of great tools that make creating a website pretty simple. Here's a good overview of some of the "how-to's" of website creation.

The article does a good job of suggesting tools and software to get you started. And it's nice to see my personal favorite secure file transfer software is recommended: "Use a file transfer program (FTP) such as Ipswitch WS_FTP to upload and download your website creation and any updated pages between your computer and web site host computer.

Security - A not so subtle reminder!

Many FTPplanet readers have commented that there was a noticeable increased focus on SECURITY in my blog posts this year

And for good reason!

This article by BankInfoSecurity lists the top 10 security breaches of 2008. Pretty sobering to say the least!

Whether you are an individual at home, a small business, a large organization or anything in between, it's pretty clear that you should take some precautions with your files and data to help ensure that your private information stays clear of bad people who are trying to do bad things.

In 2009, we'll continue to focus on security and provide tips and insights on how you can protect your files and data from prying eyes.

Attention Webmasters: What is your website's score?

I have come across a nifty online search engine optimization tool, called Website Grader, that scores a website and generates a 'grade' for website optimization purposes. It scores the website in areas relating meta tags, inbound links, indexed pages, etc. It's free and worth a run through! A couple of simple tweaks can optimize your website to generate more no-cost inbound website traffic from the search engines.

Check out this website analysis tool at http://www.websitegrader.com

SC World Congress

I just got back from the SC World Congress forum in NYC. The show was focused on data security and was bursting with great educational tracks and information from some of the world's leading vendors.

Data security is certainly a universal concern. I must have had over 100 conversations with folks from a variety of industries from around the globe, and I think that every single conversation centered on protecting data, access controls, user permissions, encryption, non-repudiation, compliance and/or high availability solutions.
